Khadi – The word itself reminds about the era of freedom fighting. This is the movement to boycott the highly expensive foreign or imported fabric. BAPU – Mahatma Gandhi started and seeded this movement. Basically the concept behind the movement is to generate self-employment at home and to create the sustainability. This activity influenced to each and every Indian so everyone started spinning cotton pods into yarn at home on hand charkha, so it called HANDSPUN. Then weavers weave the yarn on hand-loom, so it called HANDWOVEN. Thus the process of hand-spun and hand woven fabric turn into a KHADI. It may be processed with cotton, silk cocoon or wool. Mostly all natural fibers can be spun by hand and can be woven on handloom.
Khadi fabric has it’s own beauty, it enhances over washes. As it can be used for many end uses. it depends upon the count of the yarn used in the weaving process. the finest count could be 100 to 200 and the rough fabric include the 15 count of the yarn.
The khadi cloth is usually woven with cotton but it may also include silk or wool. So basically the fabric which is woven by hand spun cotton, silk or wool on hand loom is called khadi.
Khadi is also known as khaddar. Khaddar is a rough textured fabric.
While the freedom struggle of India, khadi weavers started using mill yarn for hand-loom weaving. Gandhiji started apposing and asked mill owners to not to buy the yarn to weavers. He himself started spinning and encouraging others to do so. He also made it obligatory to all members of Indian National congress to spin the yarn. he also made the charkha as a symbol of movement.
